Let Me Die Peacefully

Sit still… Observe… Let the words find you.

Children play at the park, happy and free, as all children should. We all deserve happiness and freedom.

I’m sickened by our social constructs. How money and greed trump quality of life and decency. How we’re expected to go, go, go… until we die.

This can’t be how we’re meant to live. How individuals govern and decide what’s best for our lives, without in fact knowing or caring about our lives.

How businesses and corporations can have expectations of their employees, while exploiting their labor for wages that barely sustain life. While simultaneously limiting time spent with family and friends. Oh, while making all the money, and providing in excess for themselves.

I often imagine a world more free.

But, Capitalism right?

Money makes the world go round. Not morality, not common good, and certainly not Love. Not to sound jaded. I do believe in Love.

But why is tired our commonplace? And why is adult-life a never-ending cycle of exhaustion? Task after task.

When does it ever stop? A reprieve. A moment for renewal? And don’t you dare say that damn 48-hour excuse for-what-we-call-a-weekend, that’s gone before the blink of an eye, that’s as much spent recuperating, as it is preparing for week ahead, let alone having any remaining time for family and friends.

We’re really expected just to go, go, go until we die… Inevitably.

Well, if I must work until I die, can I at least die peacefully?

Must I die to racism? Unheard cries for help? Gun violence?

If when I die is when I’ll rest, then please. Let me die peacefully.
